[e주말] WBC가 더 나아지는 길

[이데일리 스타in 이승원] 2006년 한국이 일본을 월드베이스볼클래식(WBC)에서 꺾은 순간을 기억하는가. 그것도 한 번이 아니라 두 번씩이나.

약 11년 전, 그 당시 나는 그저 TV로 고향인 한국의 감격스러운 승리를 목격한 중학생에 불과했다. 당시 한국은 현대 야구의 고향인 미국마저 꺾었다. 그때만 해도 미국은 WBC를 꽤 신경 쓰는 편이었고, 데릭 지터, 알렉스 로드리게즈, 로저 클레멘스, 켄 그리피 주니어 등 스타급 선수들로 라인업을 꾸렸었다. 그 이후 이야기는 우리가 아는 내용이니 여기서 멈추겠다.

그리고 우리에게 좋은 추억을 남겨준 바로 그 WBC가 한국 서울에서 열린다. 물론 강팀들이 예전처럼 스타 플레이어들을 앞세운 ‘베스트 라인업’을 가지고 나오진 않지만 말이다.

미국은 클레이튼 커쇼, 맥스 슈어저, 마이크 트라웃 등등 정상급 선수들 없이 라인업을 꾸렸다. 대회 2승에 빛나는 일본은 ‘신성’ 오타니 쇼헤이와 메이저리거들이 대거 불참한다. 도미니카 공화국과 다른 라틴 쪽 국가들도 메이저리그에서 뛰고 있는 선수들이 모두 참가하진 않는다. 한국조차도 메이저리거인 강정호, 박병호, 김현수, 추신수가 여러가지 이유로 제외됐다.

야구팬이라면 세계 각지에서 최고의 선수들이 나와 그들의 나라를 위해 싸우는 것을 보고 싶을 것이다. 커쇼 대 오타니의 진검 승부, 또 극단적인 예를 들자면 유희관과 트라웃의 1대1 대결까지. 내가 무슨 말을 하려 했는지 이 정도면 이해했을 것이다.

어쨌든 이 대회가 안고 있는 문제점은 정상급 선수들이 대거 빠진다는 것에 있는 듯 보인다. 하지만 선수들의 출전을 막는 가장 큰 이유는 바로 대회가 열리는 시기다.

개인적으론 WBC는 스프링캠프가 열리고 있는 지금보단, 월드시리즈가 끝난 직후 열려야 한다고 생각한다. 메이저리그 구단들은 (친선 경기가 아닌) 치열한 경기가 열리는 대회에 자신들의 선수들을 보내는 것을 꺼린다. 때문에 WBC에서 베스트 라인업을 보는 건 불가능에 가깝다.

스프링캠프의 가장 큰 목적은 선수들이 앞으로 다가올 긴 시즌을 준비하고 새 팀원들과 호흡을 맞추는 것이다. 만약 다가오는 시즌이 오승환의 데뷔 시즌이고, 오승환이 WBC 대표팀에 차출된다고 가정해보자. 그럴 경우 배터리인 한국의 오승환과 푸에트로리코의 포수 야디어 몰리나는 호흡도 제대로 맞추지 못한 채 다음 시즌을 맞이해야 한다.

WBC가 월드시리즈 후 개최 해야 하는 또 다른 이유는 부상 가능성이다. 메이저리거들이 천문학적인 연봉을 받는 건 더 이상 비밀이 아니다. 그럼에도 메이저리그 구단들은 승리를 위해 지갑을 열며 스타 플레이어들을 영입한다. 만약 내가 한 구단의 단장일 경우, 몸값으로 1억5000만 달러를 쏟아 부은 선수를 부상 위험이 있는 대회에 보낼 것 같지 않다. 그러나 월드시리즈가 끝난 직후면 다르게 생각할 수도 있다. 최소한 오프 시즌 동안 (작은 부상의 경우) 회복할 기간이 있기 때문이다.

일각에선 선수들이 긴 시즌을 보낸 후면 체력이 방전되고 지쳐 최상의 경기력을 보여줄 수 없다고 한다. 그러나 포스트시즌에 진출하지 못한 팀의 선수들 경우 시즌 종료 후 곧바로 대표팀에 합류해 폼을 유지하면 된다. 포스트시즌에 진출한 팀 선수들은 이어지는 일정으로 경기 감각을 유지하면 된다. 이후 2~3주 더 뛴다고 해서 큰 무리가 가는 것도 아니다.

더 나은 WBC를 만들기 위한 ‘명쾌한 정답’은 없다. 하지만 한 가지는 확실하다. 어떤 식으로든 WBC에는 변화가 필요하다. 세 번째 대회를 마친 지금, WBC를 향한 야구팬들의 흥미는 줄어들고 있다. 일정을 앞당기는 것이 가장 간단하면서도 쉽게 더 나은 WBC를 만드는 것일 수도 있다.

The WBC and Ways It Can Be Better

Remember when Korea beat Japan in 2006 WBC? Not only once, but twice? It was approximately 11 years ago and I was still a middle school kid watching the games on TV enjoying emotional wins of my home country.

Korea even beat USA, the home of baseball, where all the great players are born! When they actually cared about the tournament and sent the likes of Derek Jeter, A-Rod, Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey Jr.!

Well… let‘s stop there as we all know the whole story after that. (Japan beat Korea in semi-finals in extra innings).

Ahh! The great memory of WBC is back and it is in our home country Seoul!

Well… That is where the excitement ends as the top teams in this tournament will not send out their best players once again.

The roster of the host country will be without Kershaw, Scherzer, Trout and the list goes on. Japan, winners of the first two tournaments, are without their young stud Ohtani, plus all of their players that play in ML. The same goes for Dominican Republic and other strong Latin baseball countries as they won’t have their full of ML stars on their respective rosters. Even Korea will fill out line-up cards without Kang Jung-Ho, Byung-Ho Park, Hyun-Soo Kim and Shin-Soo Choo.

Baseball fans all over the world want to see the best players competing and fighting for their home country. Maybe something like a pitching matchup of ‘Kershaw vs Ohtani’ or ‘Hui-Kwan Yoo vs Trout’ (maybe I went too far). But, you get the point.

Hence, what is the problem of this tournament that every star player is so hesitant to play in? The biggest issue is the timing.

In my opinion, the Classic should start after the World Series, not during Spring Training. ML teams are so reluctant to send their best players to a competitive baseball setting right before the season begins, it is almost impossible to see the best rosters.

Spring Training is meant to be a time for players to prepare for a long season and also gain chemistry with their new teammates. Let‘s say this upcoming season will be Oh Seung-Hwan’s first year in the States and was selected to play in the tournament. How are Oh and Yadier Molina supposed get their chemistry as battery mates when one is playing for Korea and the other for Puerto Rico?

Another reason for the WBC to begin in October is possible injuries. It is no secret that these players get paid way too much. But, ML teams still invest a ton of money on their star players as nothing is more important than winning. If I was the owner or GM, I wouldn‘t let my $150 million investment walk away from my team and risk an injury. But then again, if the tournament was held right after the World Series, maybe it’s a different story as my player will at least have the offseason to heal.

Some may say that players will be too warned down and exhausted at the end of a long season. Well, the players who are not in the postseason can join their respective countries for workouts as soon as their season ends. Players on teams that are in the postseason will remain in baseball form and it won‘t be too much to play two or three more weeks of baseball.

There isn’t a clear way to fix or better the Classic. But one thing is clear. The tournament needs to be fixed in some way. After three tournaments since the existence, there is no doubt that the WBC is losing interest of baseball fans worldwide than gaining. The easy and simple way to fix that might just be the timing of the games.
